Duck Herding Team Building Events

18th November, 2024

Eight ducks to herd. Easy, right..?

A refreshingly unique way to build collaboration, communication and leadership!

Duck herding is one of our most popular team building activities, loved for its originality, energy and teamwork benefits. Originating in farming, this activity has evolved over time to become a unique tool for teaching communication skills, developing team cohesion and supporting collaboration.

Fundamentally it involves guiding a group of ducks. Under the direction of a duck herder they will navigate obstacles, complete tasks, or simply move the ducks from place to place. Historically this was done with the aid of trained dogs, typically border collies. But in our version, your team takes the place of of the dog, working together to guide ducks through a set course using hand gestures, planning and plenty of encouragement.

It’s light-hearted, surprisingly effective, and guaranteed to spark laughter and connection.

What is Duck Herding?

Our modern take on duck herding draws from its agricultural roots but replaces the sheepdog with your team. Participants must work together to guide a small group of Indian Runner ducks through a series of playful obstacles.

This involves:

  • Communicating with your colleagues

  • Coordinating movement and direction

  • Navigating obstacles without touching the ducks

  • Staying calm under pressure

  • Thinking ahead and adapting strategies

It’s a practical, feel good exercise in teamwork, problem solving and trust building, all wrapped up in a fun, outdoorsy activity.

Duck herding has 99 problems, but a bridge ain't one

About Our Ducks

We work with a friendly group of female Indian Runner ducks, known for their upright stance and gentle nature. They’re fast-moving, non-flying, and genuinely seem to enjoy the activity. Their welfare is our priority so we monitor them closely, rotate them regularly, and make sure they’re never stressed or overworked.
